16 year
old Edward (Eddie) Giffney began his musical education on piano
aged 6yrs. A year later he commenced accordion study and soon
after started lessons with Stephanie Poole. Under her tutorage,
he has been a regular competitor in the NZAA (New
Zealand Accordion Association Inc.) Championships winning
many NZ Championship classes including the NZ and South Pacific
titles for 12 yrs & under (2005), 15yrs & under (2007)
and the NZ 16 year solo (2008).
In 2007, he competed in the Coupe Mondiale competition in Washington
gaining 12th place in the Junior Coupe Mondiale category. That
same year, he was the recipient of the Douglas Mews Rosebowl for
the highest accordion examination mark (Accordion
Examination Board of NZ Inc.) and the ABRSM Hedy King Robertson
award for the top NZ music theory exam result.
Eddie is entering the two Junior Coupe Mondiale categories. He
is also performing a new work by Auckland
composer, arranger and conductor, Gary
Daverne O.N.Z.M. and as such is also entered in the new composition
for accordion category.
In addition to playing accordion, Eddie is an exceptional pianist,
gaining a distinction in his DipABRSM at just 15 years of age.
He also enjoys playing in chamber music groups and stage bands.
Currently Eddie is completing his A levels in the 7th form at
ACG Senior College whilst conjointly attending the University
of Auckland as an accelerant student studying for his Bachelor
of Music degree in piano.
