George Xu
is 18 years old. He is in his first year of a Bachelor of Science
- Biomedical Sciences degree and is working towards getting into
the University of Auckland's medicine programme next year.
George started playing the accordion when he was 9 years old,
and has been a player in the North Shore Accordion Orchestra for
most of that time.
In 2007, George obtained many international successes, including
representing New Zealand in the Junior Coupe Mondiale International
Accordion Competition in Washington D.C and gained a 6th placing
in the first round. When he returned to New Zealand, George was
proud to be the first ever accordionist to compete in the instrumental
section finals of the Mazda Foundation Young Performer of the
Year Award held in Tauranga
In May 2008, George won the New Zealand, South Pacific, and International
Open Accordion Solo competition, (run by the NZAA - New
Zealand Accordion Association Inc.) including a prestigious
award for the best Classical performance of the competitions.
In June 2008 in Sydney, (AATA
Competitions) he won the International Junior Virtuoso 20
years & under Accordion solo category at this competition.
George plays regularly for the Creative Keyboard Club in Browns
Bay, and hopes to continue competing both nationally and internationally
in preparation for the Coupe Mondiale competition in August 2009.
Outside of music, George is a keen table tennis and tennis player.
