Above left: guests at the Turku Cathedral (Turun Tuomiokirkko). The Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland and considered to be the most important religious building in Finland. The cathedral was originally built out of wood in the late 13th century, and was dedicated as the main cathedral of Finland in 1300, the seat of the bishop of Turku. It was considerably expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries, mainly using stone as the construction material. The cathedral was damaged during the Great Fire of Turku in 1827 but was rebuilt afterwards.
Above right: the beautiful Aura River and the adjacent town.
The Turku Castle (Turun linna) is a medieval building in the city of Turku and together with Turku Cathedral, the castle is one of the oldest buildings still in use in Finland. It was founded in the late 13th century and stands on the banks of the Aura River.

The Viking and Silja cruise liners make a stop at the Åland Islands. This is a region of Finland that consists of an archipelago lying at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. It is an autonomous, demilitarised entity, and is the only completely Swedish speaking region of Finland. Here is the impressive sight of four cruise liners arriving/departing the Åland Islands while making their way to and from Turku.
As the boat made its way to and from Stockholm, the Swedish and Finnish archipelagos, containing tens of thousands of islands, provided some beautiful glimpses of nature and the spectacular scenery.
