Natural Resources
Jahorina Mountain:
Jahorina is a mountain that lies mostly within the municipality of Pale, with a smaller portion in the municipality of Trnovo. It belongs to the Dinaric mountain system. The highest peak, Ogorjelica, stands at 1,916 meters above sea level. During summer, the mountain is covered in lush green grass, while in winter, it receives up to 3 meters of snow.
With an exceptional terrain configuration, an abundance of high-quality snow for skiing, a favorable climate, and more than 25 kilometers of groomed alpine skiing trails, including gentle slopes such as Rajska Dolina, Jahorina is considered one of the most beautiful and renowned ski resorts in the region.
Ski lifts and cable cars serve professional skiers, amateurs, and young beginners, with a total transport capacity of 7,500 skiers per hour.
For cross-country skiing enthusiasts, the Dvorista trail on Jahorina (1,300–1,450 meters above sea level) offers 17 km of groomed tracks, available for both competitive and recreational use. A modern biathlon shooting range provides conditions for high-level European competitions.
Jahorina’s Olympic tradition is preserved by the "Olympic Center Jahorina," which, thanks to significant investments in recent years, has positioned this mountain as one of the most important winter tourism centers in the region.
Historically, the mountain was originally called Javorina, named after the mountain or Greek maple tree, whose northernmost habitat is found here.
Jahorina is a rare place where nature has been exceptionally generous, offering everything necessary for elite athletes, recreational visitors, hunters, fishermen, hikers, and those seeking relaxation and enjoyment in fresh mountain air and stunning landscapes.
Since 1923, when the first skis were used on Jahorina at the Vukelina Voda plateau, the mountain has provided excellent conditions not only for elite athletes but also for all winter sports enthusiasts, snow activities, hikers, and medicinal herb collectors.

Romanija Caves
Orlovača Cave is one of nature’s most exquisite wonders, sculpted over millions of years. Its stalactites, stalagmites, and helictites intertwine with fragments of coral and aragonite formations, creating an interior reminiscent of ancient and Renaissance palaces. Draperies of various shapes, colors, and textures enhance the cave’s beauty, while fossilized waterfalls give it a spectacular ambiance.
The cave was once home to the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) over 16,000 years ago. It is also a habitat for one of the most endangered mammals in Europe—the bat (Microchiroptera).
Novak’s Cave (right)
Novak’s Cave is located in the steep cliffs of Romanija and is famous for being associated with the legendary outlaw Starina Novak.
Ledenjača Cave
Situated at the source of Mokranjska Miljacka, Ledenjača Cave is unique for its perpetual ice formations, which remain even in summer, making visitors feel as if they have stepped into a winter wonderland during the hottest months.
Lipovac Cave
Located along the Miljacka River, Lipovac Cave remains largely unexplored but is a fascinating site for visitors, particularly photographers seeking unique natural landscapes.

Starina Novak – The Legendary Outlaw
The Glasinac Plateau is rich in stories about outlaws who roamed Romanija, with Starina Novak (1530-1601) being the most famous. According to folk tradition, he and his brother Radivoj, along with his sons Tatomir and Grujica, fought against the Ottomans.
A famous gusle-playing society in Pale bears his name—"Starina Novak". His legacy is immortalized in Novak’s Cave, a well-known landmark on the southern slopes of Romanija Mountain, near Pale.

Culture
East Sarajevo is home to four cultural centers: the Cultural Center East New Sarajevo, the Cultural Center Pale, the Cultural Center Trnovo, and the "Pero Kosoric" Cultural Institution in Sokolac. Additionally, since 2024, the National Theatre East Sarajevo has been active.
The Cultural Center Pale has a particularly interesting and long history. The building was constructed in 1928 as a memorial to the victims of World War I and was originally named the House of Victims. During communist Yugoslavia, the building served military purposes as a barracks for some time. From 1992 to 1999, it housed the Radio-Television of the Republic of Srpska. In 1999, the building was restored to its original cultural purpose, and the Public Institution for Culture began organizing cultural events in Pale. In 2020, the building underwent reconstruction, including roof repairs and interior restoration, funded by the City Administration of East Sarajevo. Throughout its history, this cultural temple has hosted numerous cultural events, including theatre and film performances, folk and artistic societies, exhibitions, and concerts. Due to the lack of a theatre (as a new theatre building is under construction in East Sarajevo), the Cultural Center Pale often hosts theatrical and puppet performances on a small stage. It regularly screens major film productions and organizes art exhibitions. The center is the initiator and organizer of several cultural manifestations that have outgrown their local significance, such as the Conference of Babies, the Assembly of Flute Players and Ethno Music, the Saint Sava Celebrations, and the Dusko Trifunovic Days.
The Public Institution for Culture, the Cultural Center East New Sarajevo, was founded by the municipality of East New Sarajevo in 2003. The center covers a wide range of activities to meet various cultural, entertainment, and recreational interests. Its primary function is theatrical arts, but it also organizes concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, and literary events. The center has a multimedia hall with 160 seats, fully equipped with lighting and sound systems, and possesses video and cinema equipment. It also has its own gallery space for exhibitions and book promotions.
Cultural Center Trnovo – This is the only cultural institution in the municipality of Trnovo. It includes the Folklore Section "Trnovo," the Women’s Traditional Singing Group "Trnovke," and the Artistic Workshop "ECHO" (theatre, piano, solo, and ethno singing). Since its establishment, the center has hosted numerous cultural events, including literary evenings, performances, concerts, and exhibitions. Its traditional events include the "Petrovdan Days of Culture," held annually in June and July, and the "Radoslav Samardzija Days" in November.
The "Pero Kosoric" Cultural Institution in Sokolac was founded on May 26, 1994, by the Sokolac Municipal Assembly. Its traditional activities include commemorations of historical and cultural events. The institution’s building and part of its cinema hall suffered damage in a fire a few years ago, and its events are now held in other venues.
National Theatre East Sarajevo:
The idea of establishing a theatre in East Sarajevo dates back to 2003, when the municipality of East New Sarajevo began constructing a building for this purpose. The long-standing project was revived in 2017 with support from the Government of the Republic of Srpska. In late 2022, the government formally established the Public Institution National Theatre East Sarajevo. Although the theatre’s grand opening was initially planned for May 2023, due to the complexity of construction, it has been postponed to 2024.
With the establishment of the National Theatre in East Sarajevo, the Republic of Srpska has gained its second national theatre, alongside the existing National Theatre of the Republic of Srpska in Banja Luka. The new and modern theatre building is located in the municipality of East New Sarajevo, in Stefan Nemanja Street, at the heart of the city. |
