Round I of the 67th Coupe Mondiale

Twenty five candidates in the 67th Coupe Mondiale performed their first round of competitions before a jury of esteemed musicians at the Europ-Saal, the main concert hall in the Salzburg Congress Center.
 
The candidate performed the 2014 Test Round consisting of the following three (3) pieces:

  • Any Baroque work.
  • Own Choice Program: The candidate must select a program consisting of two (2) pieces, one piece to be of a slower, lyrical style* and the other piece to be of a technical virtuosic style**.  At least one (1) of these Own Choice pieces must be an original work for accordion.
     * Examples of the slower, lyrical style: Kalina Krasnaia by Semionov, Romance by Angelis, Vocalise by Rachmaninov, Aria by Bach etc...
    ** Examples of the technical virtuosic style: Caprice by Paganini, a fast Sonata by Scarlatti, Finale of 1st Sonata by Kusjakov etc...
  • A Single movement from a cyclic works is acceptable, however a maximum of only one movement from any cyclic work will be accepted. Playing time for Round I: maximum 20 minutes. Failure to observe maximum playing time will result in a mark penalty.

Note: Round I music must be played in one sitting and may be played in any order. Candidates will be judged equally on each of the three parts of Round I.

Junior Coupe Mondiale, Round I
As the contestants in the 67th Coupe Mondiale began their competition, the Junior Coupe Mondiale, attracting 25 young accordionists from around the world began their first round of competition. Each contestant was required to perform the following program:
  • Any Baroque work. (Repeats in Baroque compositions are not required.)
  • Own Choice Program: The candidate must select a program consisting of two (2) pieces, one piece to be of a slower, lyrical style* and the other piece to be of a technical virtuosic style**.  At least one (1) of these Own Choice pieces must be an original work for accordion.
    * Examples of the slower, lyrical style: Kalina Krasnaia by Semionov, Romance by Angelis, Vocalise by Rachmaninov, Aria by Bach etc...
    ** Examples of the technical virtuosic style: Caprice by Paganini, a fast Sonata by Scarlatti, Finale of 1st Sonata by Kusjakov etc...

    Round I music must be played in one sitting and may be played in any order. Candidates will be judged equally on each of the three parts of Round I.

Junior International Competition for Virtuoso Entertainment Music
The third venue of competition featured young accordionists in the Junior Intl. Comp. for Virtuoso Entertainment Music competition. Coming from as far afield as China, New Zealand, the USA and throughout Europe, the competition proved popular with the audience who heard each contestant perform as follows:
  • OWN CHOICE PROGRAM: Own choice program consisting of at least two (2) pieces of different styles and moods.
  • Playing time: maximum 7 minutes. Failure to observe the maximum playing time will result in a mark penalty.

Masters Coupe Mondiale
The Masters Coupe Mondiale showcased 28 talented competitors. The first 10 performed today, with the remaining contestants to perform tomorrow throughout the day. Each contestant performed the following:
  • OWN CHOICE PROGRAM: consisting of three (3) or more pieces including one from the Baroque era, one piece to be of a slower, lyrical style* and one piece of a technical virtuosic style**. It must contain at least one Original Work but transcriptions may also be used. Single movements from cyclic works are acceptable.
     * Examples of the slower, lyrical style: Kalina Krasnaia by Semionov, Romance by Angelis, Vocalise by Rachmaninov, Aria by Bach etc...
    ** Examples of the technical virtuosic style: Caprice by Paganini, a fast Sonata by Scarlatti, Finale of 1st Sonata by Kusjakov etc...
  • Competitors must present themselves as artists to an audience; presentation, dress and stage-craft all being important.
  • Playing time: minimum 15 minutes to maximum 20 minutes playing time. Failure to observe minimum or maximum playing time will result in a mark penalty.

Shishkin performed V. Semionov’s Sonata No. 3 "Reminiscence of the Future” which was dedicated to him by the composer. The world premiere was on 21st of November, 2013 when it was performed at the Big Concert Hall of the Moscow House of Composers, and was part of the XXXV International Contemporary Music Festival "Moscow Autumn“. Yuri is pictured with Mr. Semionov at the conclusion of the performance in Salzburg. (Holda Paoletti-Kampl - Interpreter)
